Insight into the distribution of anthocyanins in eye tissues
Anthocyanins, phenolic compounds found in many fruits and vegetables, are known for their health benefits. A recent study examined the distribution of blackcurrant anthocyanins (BCAs) in the eye tissues of rats and rabbits to better understand their role in eye health.
Distribution according to different administration methods
The study investigated the distribution of BCAs after oral, intravenous (iv) and intraperitoneal (ip) administration:
- Oral and ip administration in rats: BCAs were detected in plasma and the whole eye. Most notably, the concentration of anthocyanins was higher in the ocular tissues than in plasma, suggesting that the compounds are actively taken up into the ocular tissues.
- IV administration in rabbits: Four different anthocyanins were identified in plasma and in several ocular tissues, including the aqueous humor, cornea, sclera, choroid, ciliary body, iris and retina. Small amounts were also detected in the vitreous humor and lens.
Methods of investigation
The identification and quantification of anthocyanins was performed using high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV-Vis detection. This enabled a precise analysis of the compounds in plasma and ocular tissues.
Significance of the results
These results are significant because they show that BCAs reach the eye tissues in an intact form after administration. This suggests that anthocyanins can pass through the blood-ocular barrier and the blood-retinal barrier. The study highlights the potential of anthocyanins to reach the eyes directly and potentially exert beneficial effects there.
Conclusion and implications for eye health
The study provides valuable insights into the distribution and bioavailability of anthocyanins in the eyes. This could pave the way for future research focusing on the therapeutic applications of these compounds to support eye health.
